Surgery Clearances

Before undergoing certain medical procedures, patients may be required to get a psychological clearance evaluation. There are several reasons why this may be necessary:

  1. Insurance companies may require a psychological evaluation to ensure that the patient will benefit from the surgery and that their investment in the procedure is justified.
  2. For pain-reducing procedures, psychological factors can impact the effectiveness of the surgery. Therefore, treatment of any psychological conditions may be necessary prior to the surgery.
  3. A psychological evaluation helps to assess the patient's understanding of the procedure and their expectations of its outcome to determine if they are realistic.
  4. In cases like bariatric evaluations, lifestyle factors are evaluated to ensure that the patient has committed to healthy habits that would lead to long-term success.

The psychological evaluation typically takes between 2-4 hours and includes a clinical interview, psychological questionnaires, personality tests, and cognitive screening. The psychologist will also review medical records and provide a report with recommendations for any necessary treatments that could improve the outcome of the surgery. This report will be sent to the referring physician.
